Notes about The Pagoda, Battersea

The Japanese Pagoda is a Peace monument in Battersea Park, close to Chelsea Bridge, London.
The Pagoda on the Banks of the Thames, is maintained by Bhuddist Monks.

The Reverend Gyoro Nagase, of the Nipponzan-Myōhōji order led the contruction team and it was inaugurated in 1985. The monks who built it relied on donations and goodwill.
Flanked by London plane trees the Pagoda is a piece of Japan in Battersea Park, midway between Chelsea Bridge and Albert Bridge.

The Pagoda is 33 metres tall, finished in dark lacquered wood and bright white stone, with four gilded bronze Buddha statues which represent different stages of Buddha’s life.

The monks who built it still live in a small residence on the park grounds. They tend the gardens around the base, light incense, and walk the perimeter path beating hand drums and chanting sutras praying to keep the peace.
The pagoda is free to visit, it is open all year and there is no fee to watch the monks.

Why It Was Built

The Nipponzan-Myōhōji order was founded by Nichidatsu Fujii in the 1920s. After the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, Fujii dedicated the remaining decades of his life to a single mission: building peace pagodas across the world. There are now around 80 Nipponzan-Myōhōji peace pagodas on six continents.

The building is a quiet reminder for peace, for stillness, and a place of worship.
